The signup process is more welcoming now than in previous versions in previous years. Joining Second Life takes roughly 5-10 minutes today from the signup page to being inworld getting started as a new resident at the welcome hub. Just fill out the your avatar details (left side) for a new account for Second Life then the next step is choosing your membership plan (Plus, Premium, Premium Plus and Basic). The next step is completing the registration for Second Life which now displays your visual avatar on the right hand side (click to spin around). There is a tiny dice symbol by the starting avatar where it will automatically create your starting avatar (very cool). There is basically more customisation than before for new residents from changing body shapes, skin colours, eye colours, hair shapes, tops/bottoms and shoes. There is a new look avatar page when joining Second Life as a new resident and it’s now live to try out. I think the next few years at least may be pretty challenging depending on the real world economic situation like with the cost of living etc. It’s been a steady year for the main grid so far in 2023 but the overall trend is that Second Life is still growing after 20 years operating. Hopefully there will be more positive net growth in regions for the last four months of 2023 in Second Life. Second Life Main Grid size as of 1st January 2023 Second Life Main Grid size on 2nd July 2023 Second Life Main Grid size as of 13th August 2023 The total land area of Second Life now stands at 1820.33(KM). Hopefully with more growth it may reach or surpass the amount it was at the start of 2023. It’s not the highest it’s been though this year because there was 18, 370 on 1st January 2023. There has been good news for Private Estates as it’s been growing over the past month from 18, 330 to 18, 354 regions. More Linden owned regions have been recently been joining the Ranch area on a regular basis which is increasing the total amount of Linden Owned regions. The growth has come mostly from Linden Owned regions with the expansion of the Ranch regions which is starting to form a small/medium continent. Since the start of July 2023 there has been more positive net growth for regions in Second Life which is really good news. More updates will be posted on my blog soon on SpeedLight. TL DR: We’re experimenting with removing the online time limitation for all users. Glaznah Gassner posted this update on the SpeedLight Discord channel and on the Second Life Forums on 9th July 2023. The latest version of SpeedLight is v30 which is the mid of summer update. It’s lightweight, cross-platform viewer and it allows you to stay online, contact your friends using IMs and local chat, teleport across the world. SpeedLight is a mobile viewer for Second Life for Android and for iOS devices. There has not been any further updates since the start of July 2023 from the SpeedLight team. Hopefully soon the online time limitation will be officially removed. The SpeedLight team are excited to push the boundaries of the server capabilities and accommodate a larger number of Second Life residents online.
